We surprised ourselves this morning by getting up before the alarm went off...and that worked to our advantage because we had a long drive ahead.  Jim started out driving through busy St. Louis traffic, then John took over to drive the rest of the way across the peaceful Missouri farmland to our first destination, Independence, Missouri.  We enjoyed a hot 6 block walk to the President Harry S. Truman National Historic Site, where we were able to get the President Truman stamps, as well as the California, Santa Fe, and Oregon Trail stamps too!  Of course it was time to get a little lunch and we came upon the hippest dinner in Independence...The Up Dog!  They had every variety of good old American tube steaks with lots of different fixin's.  We both chose the Missouri Dog, which was a dog, with mustard, pickle, BACON, and shredded cheese...with sides of onion rings and cheese fries....YUMMO!  Jim then had the great task of trying to keep the RV on the hot and windy highway to Emporia, Kansas...(thank goodness for rumble strips!)  Throughout Missouri we saw diesel fuel prices for $3.29....a lot cheaper than home...but we didn't need any fuel yet.  By the time we arrived in Emporia for the night, the fuel price had gone up to $3.59....but luckily Magellan is getting 10.78 miles per gallon!  We made up for our "healthy" lunch with a dinner of tomatoes and cottage cheese.  Now we're ready to hit the road early in the morning because we have two big sightseeing events tomorrow...and  a long drive to Siebert, Colorado  So good-night from Kansas...no sighting of Dorothy yet...but we're on the lookout for Toto!
