Part II -Sight seeing and park visiting: Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument is nearly 2 million acres, managed by the BLM (Bureau of Land Management). It is over 6, 000 feet of alternating cliffs, slopes and terraces and has 5 distinct life zones. Each zone represents a different life zone from desert up to coniferous forests. It extends from the Colorado River in the south to 80 miles north to Boulder, UT on the southern edge of the Dixie Forest. The Escalante River, in this monument, was the last river to be explored and mapped in the lower 48 United States. It runs from Bryce Canyon NP in the west to Capitol Reef NP in the east. Because it is less accessible it is a gigantic scientific research laboratory.
